Is Atlanta still affordable for a single person?

Been meaning to post this. I'm a 47-year-old newlywed who's been in Atlanta for 5 years. With a population of 499,287, the city has a {city_feel}. The airport connections are excellent which matters if you travel. Thoughts?

Gonna share a detailed perspective since most replies are pretty surface-level.

I'm a single woman in Druid Hills. Been here since 2023. The suburbs vs city debate here is real..

Neighborhood-wise, Druid Hills has really transformed in the past few years. Kirkwood is the up-and-coming spot right now. Cabbagetown is where I'd look if budget is a concern.

Job market for government: solid. For construction: established.

People here are friendlier than I expected coming from {other}.

Alright, I'm going to write the reply I wish someone had written for me when I was researching Atlanta.

Background: 51, retiree, moved from Minneapolis 11 years ago for quality of life. Currently in Decatur.

**Housing:**
The market is underrated right now. We went with Decatur because close to work. Paid /mo starting out, now at /mo. If I could do it again, I'd look at Grant Park - it's quiet and the value is better.

**Work:**
hospitality jobs are growing here. I was worried coming from Minneapolis but the market is better than expected. Salary-wise, expect about 10-15% less than coastal cities.

**Social Life:**
This was my biggest worry. First 2 months were tough. Then I found my people through a kickball league. Now I have a solid group. Atlanta people are down-to-earth once you break through.

**Day to Day:**
- Groceries: manageable
- Traffic: not as bad as people say
- Dining out: improving rapidly
- Entertainment: great if you like outdoor stuff

**Would I move here again?**
Nightlife is decent if you know where to go.. For singles, I'd give it a 7/10.

Feel free to DM me with specific questions - happy to help fellow newcomers.

Great question. Here's my honest take after 5 years:

The good:
- Great food scene
- Four seasons
- Good internet

The not-so-good:
- Traffic is getting worse
- Parking is a nightmare

The community in {hood} is really tight-knit.. I'd say for retirees, Atlanta is improving. Hope that helps!

I'd highly recommend checking out Midtown. Cost of living is {col_feel} compared to where I came from.. Plus the food options around there are excellent.

I'll give you a thorough answer since I've been through this exact situation.

I moved to Poncey-Highland from Cleveland about 10 years ago. Initially I was overwhelmed. But after settling in, Downtown has improved dramatically since I first moved here..

A few things I'd recommend:
- Check out Poncey-Highland and Reynoldstown for housing
- Explore beyond the popular neighborhoods
- Talk to your neighbors - people are friendlier than you'd expect

The biggest adjustment was traffic. Traffic has gotten noticeably worse in the past year.. Overall I'd give Atlanta a 7/10 for singles.
