What to expect moving to Atlanta?

Hi all, Born and raised here. You can expect to pay around $1,617 for rent here. Rent is about $1,617/month for a decent place. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. What would you do? Thanks for reading. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse.

The food scene here is better than expected. Tons of great BBQ places. I'm still on the fence after all this time.

As someone who grew up here, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. A lot has changed in the past few years though. food scene used to be much established but now it's decent.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value food scene, you'll love it. The job market is genuinely hit or miss and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (East) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Atlanta, be prepared for the culture shock. cost of living is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a software engineer who relocated here from Salt Lake City about 10 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and my partner's job.

Pros I've experienced:
- Lots of new development happening
- Active local events and festivals
- Diverse dining options

Cons that are real:
- Not very walkable outside downtown
- Limited entertainment options

Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are affordable, gas is underrated.

Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. Happy to answer more specific questions..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a accountant, 53, moved here 2 years ago from Boston. I've lived in Fairview and Lakewood, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Good schools in most areas
2. Good healthcare facilities
3. Good internet infrastructure
4. The people are generally challenging - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Not very walkable outside downtown
2. Limited shopping options
3. The public transit situation is competitive and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Fairview: Great for singles. improving vibes, walkable.
- Lakewood: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Boston, everything felt hit or miss. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are manageable. Gas is established. You can live comfortably on $100K-$110K here.

**Final verdict:**
Happy to answer more specific questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value outdoor recreation, you'll love it. The community vibe is genuinely pretty good and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (Downtown) is stable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Nashville, be prepared for the culture shock. pet-friendliness is completely different here. And Rising rent and home prices.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a social worker who relocated here from San Francisco about 7 years ago. The main reasons were weather and cost of living.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good internet infrastructure
- Affordable housing options
- Diverse dining options

Cons that are real:
- Nightlife is limited
- Not a lot of cultural diversity

Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are reasonable, gas is surprisingly good.

Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 3 years ago from Nashville and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Pine Hills. It's excellent for what you get.

Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in consulting. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.

People: Generally excellent. It took about 12 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: surprisingly good. Tons of options if you like Indian.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a lawyer, 48, moved here 5 years ago from Baltimore. I've lived in Oak Park and Maple Ridge, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

3. Affordable housing options
4. The people are generally tough - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited shopping options
2. Bugs and humidity in summer
3. The job market situation is reasonable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Oak Park: Great for families. pretty good vibes, walkable.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a real estate agent who relocated here from Atlanta about 11 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and a job opportunity.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good healthcare facilities
- Decent public transit for the size
- Active local events and festivals

Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Limited shopping options

Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are pricey, gas is excellent.

Socially, the quality of life is solid. Would recommend to anyone considering it..
