Cost of living reality check — Birmingham

OK so I'm a teacher here and Rent is about $1,047/month for a decent place. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. What neighborhoods would you suggest?

We moved here with our family and it exceeded my expectations. Schools in Maple Ridge area are tough. Kids love it here.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Internet is average in most areas.

Used to live on the Midtown side, now on the Pine Hills side. Completely different vibe. it was the best decision I ever made.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is food scene. it's improved dramatically in recent years. Worth doing your research before committing.

I've lived in East for about 7 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from San Diego, I was surprised by food scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Good healthcare facilities
- Decent public transit for the size
- The job market scene is underrated

The downsides:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Urban sprawl is real

Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for young professionals. Hope this helps!.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 4 years ago from Tampa and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Eastside. It's better than expected for what you get.

Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in legal. If you're in marketing you might struggle.

People: Generally underrated. It took about 17 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: surprisingly good. Tons of options if you like Thai.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..
