First time home buyer in Birmingham

Hey, I'm single, late 40s, and Median household income is $44,376, which feels on the lower side for the area. You can expect to pay around $1,047 for rent here. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. What neighborhoods would you suggest?

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a social worker who relocated here from Baltimore about 11 years ago. The main reasons were weather and cost of living.

Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Lots of new development happening
- Strong sense of community

Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Winters are long and cold

Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are reasonable, gas is average.

Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. Definitely worth checking out..
