Moving to Birmingham with kids — good idea?

So, I've been here for 5 years and Crime rate is something to consider — Birmingham sits at 1,588.3 per 100K. You can expect to pay around $1,047 for rent here. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Would love some local perspective. Thanks in advance! The city has invested a lot in new development.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.

I've been here 5 years and I love the pace of life here. The thing nobody mentions is walkability. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into biking, this place is decent.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Sunset side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Definitely worth checking out..

Came here for retirement and stayed because I love the pace of life here. The outdoor recreation is honestly improving and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

The food scene here is challenging. Tons of great craft beer places. it's exactly what I was looking for.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a teacher who relocated here from Pittsburgh about 4 years ago. The main reasons were family and a fresh start.

Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Decent public transit for the size
- Good internet infrastructure

Cons that are real:
- Limited shopping options
- Limited entertainment options

Financially, we've found it challenging compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are developing, gas is better than expected.

Socially, I genuinely enjoy living here. Happy to answer more specific questions..

I've lived in Oak Park for about 1 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from Tampa, I was surprised by walkability. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Good schools in most areas
- Affordable housing options
- The dating scene scene is underrated

The downsides:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Limited shopping options

Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for young professionals. Would recommend to anyone considering it..
