What Birmingham does better than anywhere else

Hey everyone, Crime rate is something to consider — Birmingham sits at 1,588.3 per 100K. It's a a mid-size city city with about 199K people. Homes are going for about $138,600 on average. Rent is about $1,047/month for a decent place. With a population of 199K, Birmingham is a mid-size city. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The weather takes some getting used to. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable.

Pros:
- Good job market
- Nice parks and trails
- Easy commute
- Good healthcare facilities
- Active local events

Cons:
- Limited nightlife
- Not very walkable
- Boring for young people
- Mosquitoes and humidity
- Far from major airports
Am I overthinking this? Thanks! The weather takes some getting used to. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The city has invested a lot in new development. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is housing market. the quality of life is solid. Worth doing your research before committing.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 6 years ago from Houston and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Downtown. It's tough for what you get.

Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in retail. If you're in consulting you might struggle.

People: Generally hit or miss. It took about 13 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like Mexican.

Hope this helps!.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem hit or miss.

I've been here 3 years and I love the pace of life here. The thing nobody mentions is walkability. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is excellent.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The West side vs the North side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a real estate agent, 52, moved here 7 years ago from Austin. I've lived in Old Town and Westside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Friendly community, easy to meet people
2. Good schools in most areas
3. Low crime in most neighborhoods
4. The people are generally hit or miss - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Traffic during rush hour is rough
2. Chain restaurants dominate
3. The school system situation is reasonable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Old Town: Great for retirees. pretty good vibes, walkable.
- Westside: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Austin, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are reasonable. Gas is affordable. You can live comfortably on $70K-$70K here.

**Final verdict:**
Feel free to reach out with questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
