Working in Birmingham — salaries realistic?

Been meaning to ask this. My partner and I are Rent is about $1,047/month for a decent place. The weather takes some getting used to. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The food scene here is surprisingly good. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much.

I've been in Downtown for 1 years. Moved from Portland for school. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is better than expected. We bought in 2015 at k and it's now worth up significantly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 1-bed in a safe area. Older homes are where the value is.

**Employment:**
hospitality is strong here. healthcare is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are manageable for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it's exactly what I was looking for. The outdoor scene is improving - we have ski resorts within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Downtown schools are pretty good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Winters are long and cold. Dating scene is rough. And food scene can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**

I'm a teacher who relocated here from San Francisco about 1 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and cost of living.

Pros I've experienced:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Strong job market in several industries
- Diverse dining options

Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Can feel isolated

Financially, we've found it decent compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are affordable, gas is solid.

Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. Definitely worth checking out..
