Hello, I grew up here but left for a while. Average temperature is around 44--F, so bundle up in winter. Homes are going for about $805,200 on average. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Worth the trade-offs? The suburbs are where most families end up. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. I've lived in Meadowbrook for about 14 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I'm still on the fence after all this time. When I first moved here from San Diego, I was surprised by job market. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Close to major attractions
- The pet-friendliness scene is solid
The downsides:
- Nightlife is limited
- Can feel isolated
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for families. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Weather-wise, the summers are solid and winters are wild. You get used to it after the first year.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's been a really good experience overall. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem hit or miss.
I've been here 6 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is traffic. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the safety is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is challenging.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Fairview side vs the West side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
