Career opportunities in Brookings, SD

The median home value here is around $243,600, which is actually reasonable. With a population of 23,710, Brookings is a small town. Homes are going for about $243,600 on average. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Does this match your experience? People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The city has invested a lot in new development. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a project manager who relocated here from Charlotte about 6 years ago. The main reasons were family and a job opportunity.

Pros I've experienced:
- Decent public transit for the size
- Close to major attractions
- Good airport with direct flights

Cons that are real:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Dating scene is rough

Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are wild, gas is challenging.

Socially, it was the best decision I ever made. No regrets on my end..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value school system, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely pretty good and I've found it exceeded my expectations. My neighborhood (Eastside) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Houston, be prepared for the culture shock. safety is completely different here. And Not a lot of cultural diversity.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
