Hey folks, I'm single, late 40s, and Rent is about $971/month for a decent place. Poverty rate is 14.8%, which is around average. Median household income is $46,261, which feels on the lower side for the area. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The weather takes some getting used to. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Am I overthinking this? Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The suburbs are where most families end up. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Property taxes are high but you get good services. I've been living here for 12 years and I'd say it exceeded my expectations. The traffic is improving compared to other places I've lived. Overall Happy to answer more specific questions..

Hot take but I love the pace of life here. I know a lot of people disagree but after 4 years here, that's my honest assessment.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a nurse, 48, moved here 8 years ago from Dallas. I've lived in West and Old Town, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Low crime in most neighborhoods
2. Decent public transit for the size
3. Lots of new development happening
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Traffic during rush hour is rough
2. Property taxes are high
3. The school system situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- West: Great for couples. tough vibes, walkable.
- Old Town: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Dallas, everything felt underrated. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are developing. Gas is growing. You can live comfortably on $70K-$110K here.
**Final verdict:**
Would recommend to anyone considering it.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

I've lived in Oak Park for about 11 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it was the best decision I ever made. When I first moved here from Atlanta, I was surprised by safety. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Lots of new development happening
- The community vibe scene is solid
The downsides:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Urban sprawl is real
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for couples. Definitely worth checking out..

Used to live on the Lakewood side, now on the Fairview side. Completely different vibe. I love the pace of life here.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.
I've been here 1 years and it exceeded my expectations. The thing nobody mentions is cost of living. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is excellent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Springfield side vs the Uptown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
No regrets on my end..

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. I have mixed feelings honestly. Internet is pretty good in most areas.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. it's exactly what I was looking for. Compared to Denver it's average.
