Alright, I work in consulting and The median home value here is around $186,100, which is actually reasonable. Household incomes average around $54,870 in Cape Girardeau. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Would love some local perspective. TIA!

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is healthcare. it exceeded my expectations. Worth doing your research before committing.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 11 years ago from Pittsburgh and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Cedar Grove. It's tough for what you get.
Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in government. If you're in government you might struggle.
People: Generally improving. It took about 10 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: hit or miss. Tons of options if you like Italian.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

I work in tech here and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The job market for my field is better than expected. Hope this helps!.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are improving, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Public transit is tough here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 1 years ago from Houston and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in South. It's challenging for what you get.
Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in hospitality. If you're in construction you might struggle.
People: Generally decent. It took about 18 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like Southern.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. it's not perfect but it works for me. Internet is solid in most areas.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a sales manager who relocated here from Boston about 7 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and cost of living.
Pros I've experienced:
- Decent public transit for the size
- Affordable housing options
- Strong sense of community
Cons that are real:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Far from beaches/mountains
Financially, we've found it decent compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are wild, gas is underrated.
Socially, I love the pace of life here. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem improving.
I've been here 12 years and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The thing nobody mentions is traffic. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is excellent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Old Town side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Hope this helps!.

I'm a lawyer and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The community is solid and there's always something going on.

I'm a physical therapist who relocated here from Baltimore about 4 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and cost of living.
Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Lots of new development happening
- Good airport with direct flights
Cons that are real:
- Nightlife is limited
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are established, gas is solid.
Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..
