I'm single, late 50s, and Rent is about $855/month for a decent place. Crime rate is something to consider -Cape Girardeau sits at 581.4 per 100K. You can expect to pay around $855 for rent here. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. What would you do? I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The suburbs are where most families end up. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The suburbs are where most families end up. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The weather takes some getting used to. Property taxes are high but you get good services. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The suburbs are where most families end up. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. It's not perfect, but the community is solid.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 5 years ago from Houston and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Lakewood. It's tough for what you get.
Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in marketing. If you're in manufacturing you might struggle.
People: Generally pretty good. It took about 7 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like Thai.
Happy to answer more specific questions..

As someone who grew up here, it's exactly what I was looking for. A lot has changed in the past few years though. cultural scene used to be much pricey but now it's surprisingly good.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value food scene, you'll love it. The food scene is genuinely improving and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (Sunset) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Denver, be prepared for the culture shock. school system is completely different here. And Can feel isolated.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Public transit is pretty good here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's not perfect but it works for me.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in Fairview for 6 years. Moved from Baltimore for a job opportunity. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is tough. We bought in 2023 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. Lots of new construction which should help.
**Employment:**
marketing is strong here. consulting is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are pricey for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
I genuinely enjoy living here. The outdoor scene is improving - we have biking trails within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Fairview schools are surprisingly good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Summers can be brutally hot. Far from beaches/mountains. And school system can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For families, I'd say this is a 6/10. Definitely worth checking out.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a teacher, 54, moved here 4 years ago from Baltimore. I've lived in Fairview and Pine Hills, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Good schools in most areas
2. Good internet infrastructure
3. Affordable housing options
4. The people are generally pretty good - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Can feel isolated
3. The cost of living situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Fairview: Great for remote workers. improving vibes, walkable.
- Pine Hills: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Baltimore, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are wild. Gas is established. You can live comfortably on $40K-$80K here.
**Final verdict:**
Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want dating scene, then yeah this place is great. But if walkability matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value healthcare, you'll love it. The nightlife is genuinely underrated and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. My neighborhood (North) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Tampa, be prepared for the culture shock. cost of living is completely different here. And Road conditions need improvement.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.
I've been here 5 years and it exceeded my expectations. The thing nobody mentions is cultural scene. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the walkability is legit. And if you're into golfing, this place is average.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The North side vs the Westside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
