Hey folks, Been living here since 2012. Crime rate is something to consider -Cape Girardeau sits at 581.4 per 100K. Average temperature is around 57--F, so the weather is moderate. Rent is about $855/month for a decent place. Poverty rate is 9.9%, which is pretty low. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Am I overthinking this? People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The weather takes some getting used to.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value public transit, you'll love it. The school system is genuinely hit or miss and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. My neighborhood (Meadowbrook) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Raleigh, be prepared for the culture shock. cultural scene is completely different here. And Limited high-paying job options.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Hot take but it's exactly what I was looking for. I know a lot of people disagree but after 10 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Used to live on the Springfield side, now on the Eastside side. Completely different vibe. it's improved dramatically in recent years.
