Random thought, I'm single, late 20s, and With a population of 40,047, Cape Girardeau is a smaller city. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 4 years and it exceeded my expectations. The thing nobody mentions is nightlife. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into hiking, this place is average.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Downtown side vs the West side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a HR manager who relocated here from Raleigh about 13 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and weather.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Good airport with direct flights
- Diverse dining options
Cons that are real:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Can feel isolated
Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are competitive, gas is decent.
Socially, I genuinely enjoy living here. It's not for everyone but it works for us..
