Rent vs buy in Charleston -what makes sense?

I grew up here but left for a while. Rent is about $898/month for a decent place. The unemployment rate is 3.7%, which is pretty low. Crime rate is something to consider -Charleston sits at 1,227.0 per 100K. You can expect to pay around $898 for rent here. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The city has invested a lot in new development. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The weather takes some getting used to. It's not perfect, but the community is solid.
