Thinking about relocating to Coal City from Houston
Not sure if this has been asked before, but I grew up here but left for a while. Crime rate is something to consider -Coal City sits at 74.9 per 100K. The median home value here is around $211,600, which is actually reasonable. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Thanks in advance! Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.

The food scene here is solid. Tons of great Thai places. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in The Heights for 7 years. Moved from Baltimore for quality of life. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is better than expected. We bought in 2017 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. Lots of new construction which should help.
**Employment:**
legal is strong here. finance is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are developing for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
it's been a really good experience overall. The outdoor scene is improving - we have hiking trails within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. The Heights schools are surprisingly good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Not very walkable outside downtown. Can feel isolated. And school system can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For remote workers, I'd say this is a 6/10. Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a real estate agent who relocated here from Baltimore about 1 years ago. The main reasons were work and work.
Pros I've experienced:
- Four distinct seasons
- Good airport with direct flights
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Limited shopping options
- Dating scene is rough
Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are pricey, gas is pretty good.
Socially, I genuinely enjoy living here. Good luck with whatever you decide..

We moved here with our family and it's exactly what I was looking for. Schools in South area are better than expected. Kids love it here.
