Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a sales manager who relocated here from Houston about 10 years ago. The main reasons were family and quality of life.
Pros I've experienced:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Close to major attractions
- Affordable housing options
Cons that are real:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Far from beaches/mountains
Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are pricey, gas is solid.
Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. Definitely worth checking out..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem underrated.
I've been here 11 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is job market. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the housing market is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is pretty good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Westside side vs the Cedar Grove side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Good luck with whatever you decide..

I work in construction here and it's been a really good experience overall. The job market for my field is better than expected. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

I've been here 1 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is dating scene. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the cultural scene is legit. And if you're into hiking, this place is average.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Uptown side vs the Sunset side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
