OK so I'm a college student here and You can expect to pay around $754 for rent here. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Thoughts?

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a marketing manager who relocated here from Salt Lake City about 7 years ago. The main reasons were work and a job opportunity.
Pros I've experienced:
- Decent public transit for the size
- Active local events and festivals
- Four distinct seasons
Cons that are real:
- Nightlife is limited
- Urban sprawl is real
Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are pricey, gas is excellent.
Socially, I have mixed feelings honestly. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem pretty good.
I've been here 7 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the job market is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is pretty good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Maple Ridge side vs the Westside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Public transit is better than expected here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I love the pace of life here.
