Affordable areas near DeKalb?

OK so I've been here for 1 years and Poverty rate is 18.9%, which is higher than I expected. Median household income is $46,564, which feels on the lower side for the area. It's a a smaller city city with about 40,464 people. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

Pros:
- Great weather
- Diverse community
- Easy commute
- Good internet infrastructure

Cons:
- Limited nightlife
- Limited dining options
- Boring for young people
- Far from major airports
- Homelessness issues downtown
It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The weather takes some getting used to. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem tough.

I've been here 13 years and it's been a really good experience overall. The thing nobody mentions is cost of living. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into running, this place is pretty good.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Fairview side vs the Springfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 3 years ago from Miami and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Meadowbrook. It's improving for what you get.

Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in engineering. If you're in hospitality you might struggle.

People: Generally challenging. It took about 10 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: tough. Tons of options if you like Asian.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

I've lived in Fairview for about 8 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's exactly what I was looking for. When I first moved here from Miami, I was surprised by safety. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Nice parks and green spaces
- The job market scene is surprisingly good

The downsides:
- Road conditions need improvement
- Bugs and humidity in summer

Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for couples. It's not for everyone but it works for us..
