What I wish I knew before living in East Palo Alto
Random thought, We're a young couple and The median home value here is around $1,124,000, which is pretty steep. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. What do you all think? It's not perfect, but the community is solid. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value healthcare, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely average and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (Pine Hills) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from LA, be prepared for the culture shock. public transit is completely different here. And Rising rent and home prices.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Hot take but it's been a really good experience overall. I know a lot of people disagree but after 14 years here, that's my honest assessment.

I work in retail here and it's not perfect but it works for me. The job market for my field is hit or miss. Good luck with whatever you decide..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 13 years ago from Minneapolis and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in East. It's surprisingly good for what you get.
Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in marketing. If you're in manufacturing you might struggle.
People: Generally better than expected. It took about 7 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: surprisingly good. Tons of options if you like Southern.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Came here for work and stayed because the quality of life is solid. The job market is honestly challenging and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. it was the best decision I ever made. Compared to San Diego it's challenging.
