I'm a teacher here and The median home value here is around $134,700, which is actually reasonable. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Any advice would be great. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value weather, you'll love it. The job market is genuinely underrated and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (South) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Denver, be prepared for the culture shock. weather is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem challenging.
I've been here 14 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is housing market. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the healthcare is legit. And if you're into biking, this place is surprisingly good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Springfield side vs the Meadowbrook side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Hope this helps!.

As someone who grew up here, I'm still on the fence after all this time. A lot has changed in the past few years though. housing market used to be much stable but now it's better than expected.

Used to live on the Eastside side, now on the North side. Completely different vibe. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are surprisingly good, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

I've lived in North for about 10 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's been a really good experience overall. When I first moved here from Atlanta, I was surprised by job market. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Good airport with direct flights
- Strong sense of community
- The community vibe scene is solid
The downsides:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Urban sprawl is real
Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for singles. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 8 years ago from Miami and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Cedar Grove. It's tough for what you get.
Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in manufacturing you might struggle.
People: Generally challenging. It took about 8 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like Mediterranean.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I've been living here for 11 years and I'd say it's been a really good experience overall. The public transit is pretty good compared to other places I've lived. Overall Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

If you value cultural scene, you'll love it. The walkability is genuinely underrated and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. My neighborhood (Riverside) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. dating scene is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
