Moving from Portland to Elba next month

Not sure if this has been asked before, but I'm a 27-year-old software engineer and The unemployment rate is 2.4%, which is pretty low. The food scene here is surprisingly good. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Anyone in a similar situation? Downtown has improved a lot in recent years.

Weather-wise, the summers are tough and winters are established. You get used to it after the first year.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 11 years ago from Seattle and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Maple Ridge. It's average for what you get.

Jobs: The market is established right now, especially in manufacturing. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.

People: Generally challenging. It took about 9 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like Mexican.

No regrets on my end..

I've lived in Riverside for about 11 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it was the best decision I ever made. When I first moved here from Chicago, I was surprised by cultural scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Good healthcare facilities
- The school system scene is improving

The downsides:
- Nightlife is limited
- Can feel isolated

Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for singles. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value outdoor recreation, you'll love it. The walkability is genuinely improving and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. My neighborhood (Pine Hills) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Seattle, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Limited shopping options.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
