Just moved here 18 months ago and Household incomes average around $47,885 in Elkhart. Rent is about $981/month for a decent place. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Thoughts?

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a nurse who relocated here from Baltimore about 3 years ago. The main reasons were school and school.
Pros I've experienced:
- Lots of new development happening
- Strong sense of community
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Property taxes are high
Financially, we've found it decent compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are manageable, gas is underrated.
Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Definitely worth checking out..

I've lived in West for about 6 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I love the pace of life here. When I first moved here from Atlanta, I was surprised by outdoor recreation. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Strong job market in several industries
- The safety scene is hit or miss
The downsides:
- Property taxes are high
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for singles. Definitely worth checking out..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a data analyst, 35, moved here 2 years ago from Minneapolis. I've lived in Oak Park and South, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Nice parks and green spaces
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally better than expected - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Not a lot of cultural diversity
2. Chain restaurants dominate
3. The job market situation is pricey and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Oak Park: Great for families. excellent vibes, walkable.
- South: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

Coming from Minneapolis, everything felt improving. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is competitive. You can live comfortably on $100K-$120K here.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value safety, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely improving and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (The Heights) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Raleigh, be prepared for the culture shock. traffic is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
