Is Elkhart worth moving to in 2026?

Not sure if this has been asked before, but The unemployment rate is 2.2%, which is pretty low. Rent is about $981/month for a decent place. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Am I overthinking this? Thanks! The suburbs are where most families end up. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

I've lived in The Heights for about 3 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

the quality of life is solid. When I first moved here from Houston, I was surprised by school system. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Four distinct seasons
- The dating scene scene is challenging

The downsides:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Not a lot of cultural diversity

Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for singles. No regrets on my end..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a electrician, 52, moved here 11 years ago from Chicago. I've lived in East and Eastside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Good schools in most areas
3. Close to major attractions
4. The people are generally improving - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Nightlife is limited
2. Limited shopping options
3. The housing market situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- East: Great for retirees. excellent vibes, walkable.
- Eastside: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Chicago, everything felt surprisingly good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are reasonable. Gas is reasonable. You can live comfortably on $60K-$70K here.

**Final verdict:**
No regrets on my end.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
