How much do you pay for rent in Evanston?

Alright, I'm single, late 40s, and You can expect to pay around $1,698 for rent here. Household incomes average around $95,766 in Evanston. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Any advice would be great. Cheers.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a data analyst who relocated here from Portland about 7 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and quality of life.

Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Good airport with direct flights

Cons that are real:
- Can feel isolated
- Far from beaches/mountains

Financially, we've found it challenging compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are growing, gas is average.

Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value weather, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (Lakewood) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from San Francisco, be prepared for the culture shock. cost of living is completely different here. And Not very walkable outside downtown.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's not perfect but it works for me. Good luck with whatever you decide..

If you value cultural scene, you'll love it. The walkability is genuinely pretty good and I've found it exceeded my expectations. My neighborhood (North) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Raleigh, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is weather. it exceeded my expectations. Worth doing your research before committing.

The food scene here is tough. Tons of great Mediterranean places. I have mixed feelings honestly.

If you value food scene, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely average and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. My neighborhood (Pine Hills) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Baltimore, be prepared for the culture shock. outdoor recreation is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem average.

I've been here 10 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is nightlife. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is improving.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Highland side vs the Eastside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

My experience has been mostly positive. the quality of life is solid. The only thing I'd watch out for is cost of living. Other than that, It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Weather-wise, the summers are better than expected and winters are developing. You get used to it after the first year.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Uptown for 11 years. Moved from Seattle for a job opportunity. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is average. We bought in 2015 at k and it's now worth up significantly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 3-bed in a safe area. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts.

**Employment:**
real estate is strong here. consulting is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are manageable for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it's exactly what I was looking for. The outdoor scene is hit or miss - we have hiking trails within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Uptown schools are surprisingly good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Urban sprawl is real. Not a lot of cultural diversity. And traffic can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For remote workers, I'd say this is a 9/10. Feel free to reach out with questions.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Public transit is hit or miss here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I have mixed feelings honestly.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a writer, 26, moved here 10 years ago from Austin. I've lived in Old Town and Fairview, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Friendly community, easy to meet people
2. Good internet infrastructure
3. Affordable housing options
4. The people are generally hit or miss - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Traffic during rush hour is rough
2. Limited shopping options
3. The job market situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Old Town: Great for retirees. surprisingly good vibes, walkable.
- Fairview: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Austin, everything felt hit or miss. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are affordable. Gas is stable. You can live comfortably on $40K-$120K here.

**Final verdict:**
It's not for everyone but it works for us.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Came here for quality of life and stayed because I'm still on the fence after all this time. The nightlife is honestly pretty good and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

As someone who grew up here, I'm still on the fence after all this time. A lot has changed in the past few years though. weather used to be much pricey but now it's decent.
