Not sure if this has been asked before, but Born and raised here. Median household income is $90,515, which feels pretty solid for the area. Rent is about $1,836/month for a decent place. Poverty rate is 7.8%, which is pretty low. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Any advice would be great. The weather takes some getting used to. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.
I've been here 13 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is dating scene. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the dating scene is legit. And if you're into running, this place is pretty good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Springfield side vs the West side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Happy to answer more specific questions..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, I have mixed feelings honestly. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a contractor who relocated here from Minneapolis about 10 years ago. The main reasons were weather and work.
Pros I've experienced:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Four distinct seasons
- Close to major attractions
Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Can feel isolated
Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are developing, gas is underrated.
Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Public transit is improving here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's improved dramatically in recent years.

I'm a social worker who relocated here from Atlanta about 14 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and weather.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Good internet infrastructure
- Affordable housing options
Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Road conditions need improvement
Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are growing, gas is hit or miss.
Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Hot take but the quality of life is solid. I know a lot of people disagree but after 4 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in The Heights for 2 years. Moved from Phoenix for a fresh start. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is decent. We bought in 2023 at k and it's now worth up significantly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 3-bed in a safe area. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable.
**Employment:**
consulting is strong here. marketing is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are stable for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
I'm still on the fence after all this time. The outdoor scene is improving - we have beaches within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. The Heights schools are improving. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Road conditions need improvement. Bugs and humidity in summer. And public transit can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For singles, I'd say this is a 9/10. Feel free to reach out with questions.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.
