Hello, Rent is about $1,690/month for a decent place. You can expect to pay around $1,690 for rent here. The suburbs are where most families end up. Would love some local perspective. Property taxes are high but you get good services.

Weather-wise, the summers are tough and winters are wild. You get used to it after the first year.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 3 years ago from Salt Lake City and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Westside. It's improving for what you get.
Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in hospitality. If you're in marketing you might struggle.
People: Generally underrated. It took about 4 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: pretty good. Tons of options if you like BBQ.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.
I've been here 15 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is nightlife. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the walkability is legit. And if you're into hiking, this place is tough.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Riverside side vs the Meadowbrook side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Hope this helps!.

My experience has been mostly positive. it's improved dramatically in recent years. The only thing I'd watch out for is traffic. Other than that, It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Public transit is improving here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's not perfect but it works for me.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a chef, 30, moved here 3 years ago from Chicago. I've lived in Maple Ridge and Springfield, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Friendly community, easy to meet people
2. Low crime in most neighborhoods
3. Strong job market in several industries
4. The people are generally excellent - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Winters are long and cold
2. Road conditions need improvement
3. The healthcare situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Maple Ridge: Great for retirees. average vibes, walkable.
- Springfield: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Chicago, everything felt challenging. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are wild. Gas is competitive. You can live comfortably on $50K-$70K here.
**Final verdict:**
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
