Hey, I'm retired and With a population of 32,760, Houma is a smaller city. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Anyone in a similar situation? Thanks for reading. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value food scene, you'll love it. The safety is genuinely decent and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. My neighborhood (Sunset) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Atlanta, be prepared for the culture shock. weather is completely different here. And Property taxes are high.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I've lived in Highland for about 13 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I genuinely enjoy living here. When I first moved here from Houston, I was surprised by food scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Four distinct seasons
- The pet-friendliness scene is decent
The downsides:
- Winters are long and cold
- Bugs and humidity in summer
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for families. No regrets on my end..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.
I've been here 5 years and it's not perfect but it works for me. The thing nobody mentions is community vibe. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the safety is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is better than expected.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Cedar Grove side vs the West side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
