First post here. Military spouse here. Crime rate is something to consider -Levelland sits at 1,034.7 per 100K. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Am I overthinking this? Appreciate any input. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are pretty good, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a real estate agent who relocated here from Chicago about 9 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and a job opportunity.
Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Lots of new development happening
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Far from beaches/mountains
Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are developing, gas is excellent.
Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

We moved here with our family and it was the best decision I ever made. Schools in Lakewood area are decent. Kids love it here.
