Hey everyone, I'm single, late 20s, and Poverty rate is 18.4%, which is higher than I expected. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The city has invested a lot in new development. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The suburbs are where most families end up.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.
I've been here 5 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is housing market. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the community vibe is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is decent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Meadowbrook side vs the Midtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value public transit, you'll love it. The community vibe is genuinely tough and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (Uptown) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Atlanta, be prepared for the culture shock. cultural scene is completely different here. And Property taxes are high.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
