I've lived in Downtown for about 7 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I love the pace of life here. When I first moved here from Nashville, I was surprised by cultural scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Strong job market in several industries
- The food scene scene is excellent
The downsides:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Homeless population growing downtown
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for singles. Hope this helps!.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem tough.
I've been here 1 years and it's not perfect but it works for me. The thing nobody mentions is job market. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the nightlife is legit. And if you're into running, this place is pretty good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Meadowbrook side vs the Maple Ridge side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a writer who relocated here from LA about 9 years ago. The main reasons were family and cost of living.
Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Good schools in most areas
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are developing, gas is underrated.
Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Definitely worth checking out..

Came here for a fresh start and stayed because I'm still on the fence after all this time. The cost of living is honestly excellent and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value outdoor recreation, you'll love it. The healthcare is genuinely decent and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (Eastside) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Chicago, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
