Cost of living reality check -Manhattan

First post here. Born and raised here. Household incomes average around $58,441 in Manhattan. Crime rate is something to consider -Manhattan sits at 813.0 per 100K. Poverty rate is 13.5%, which is around average. Rent is about $1,019/month for a decent place. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus.

Pros:
- Affordable cost of living
- Nice parks and trails
- Low crime in most areas
- Good healthcare facilities
- Strong sense of community

Cons:
- Limited public transit
- Few job opportunities in some fields
- Limited cultural events
Let me know your thoughts. Cheers. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The city has invested a lot in new development. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Night life is decent if you know the right spots.

The food scene here is tough. Tons of great Southern places. I genuinely enjoy living here.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a sales manager, 34, moved here 11 years ago from Baltimore. I've lived in Springfield and West, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Growing food and restaurant scene
2. Good schools in most areas
3. Four distinct seasons
4. The people are generally excellent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited shopping options
2. Dating scene is rough
3. The traffic situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Springfield: Great for singles. underrated vibes, walkable.
- West: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Baltimore, everything felt underrated. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are competitive. Gas is manageable. You can live comfortably on $40K-$110K here.

**Final verdict:**
It's not for everyone but it works for us.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
