Best and worst neighborhoods in Merced

You can expect to pay around $1,293 for rent here. The unemployment rate is 7.6%, which is concerning. Average temperature is around 63--F, so the weather is moderate. With a population of 89,766, Merced is a smaller city. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The weather takes some getting used to. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. It's not perfect, but the community is solid.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is public transit. it's been a really good experience overall. Worth doing your research before committing.

My experience has been mostly positive. I genuinely enjoy living here. The only thing I'd watch out for is weather. Other than that, Good luck with whatever you decide..

I've been living here for 5 years and I'd say there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The food scene is challenging compared to other places I've lived. Overall Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

I've been living here for 9 years and I'd say I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The traffic is tough compared to other places I've lived. Overall Definitely worth checking out..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are excellent, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem improving.

I've been here 15 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is healthcare. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the job market is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is better than expected.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Greenfield side vs the Springfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Feel free to reach out with questions..

We moved here with our family and it exceeded my expectations. Schools in Pine Hills area are surprisingly good. Kids love it here.

I've been here 6 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is dating scene. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the nightlife is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is pretty good.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Eastside side vs the Westside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

No regrets on my end..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in The Heights for 8 years. Moved from Denver for weather. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is tough. We bought in 2020 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 4-bed in a safe area. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable.

**Employment:**
consulting is strong here. legal is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are affordable for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it exceeded my expectations. The outdoor scene is pretty good - we have rivers within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. The Heights schools are surprisingly good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Winters are long and cold. Not a lot of cultural diversity. And walkability can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For remote workers, I'd say this is a 9/10. No regrets on my end.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 11 years ago from New York and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Springfield. It's pretty good for what you get.

Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in construction. If you're in tech you might struggle.

People: Generally decent. It took about 4 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: average. Tons of options if you like Italian.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value housing market, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely decent and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. My neighborhood (Oak Park) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Pittsburgh, be prepared for the culture shock. housing market is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
