What's it really like living in Monticello?

Hey everyone, Born and raised here. Household incomes average around $27,998 in Monticello. You can expect to pay around $676 for rent here. The unemployment rate is 3.5%, which is pretty low. Poverty rate is 21.1%, which is higher than I expected. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The city has invested a lot in new development.

Pros:
- Great weather
- Nice parks and trails
- Good schools
- Close to nature
- Good internet infrastructure

Cons:
- Traffic can be terrible
- Sprawl everywhere
- Chain restaurants dominate
What do you all think? There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The suburbs are where most families end up. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The suburbs are where most families end up. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Public transit is average here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I'm still on the fence after all this time.

We moved here with our family and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Schools in Downtown area are decent. Kids love it here.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a pharmacist who relocated here from Seattle about 8 years ago. The main reasons were weather and a job opportunity.

Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Lots of family-friendly activities

Cons that are real:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Road conditions need improvement

Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are established, gas is solid.

Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. Feel free to reach out with questions..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from Minneapolis and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Westside. It's better than expected for what you get.

Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in engineering. If you're in tech you might struggle.

People: Generally decent. It took about 10 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: tough. Tons of options if you like Vietnamese.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..
