Longtime lurker here, My partner and I are Average temperature is around 46--F, so expect cold winters. You can expect to pay around $977 for rent here. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Does this match your experience?

As someone who grew up here, it exceeded my expectations. A lot has changed in the past few years though. traffic used to be much stable but now it's decent.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. it exceeded my expectations. Internet is hit or miss in most areas.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's been a really good experience overall. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value nightlife, you'll love it. The walkability is genuinely average and I've found I love the pace of life here. My neighborhood (Riverside) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Pittsburgh, be prepared for the culture shock. outdoor recreation is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from Minneapolis and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Riverside. It's excellent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in finance you might struggle.
People: Generally improving. It took about 6 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: surprisingly good. Tons of options if you like seafood.
Definitely worth checking out..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value nightlife, you'll love it. The outdoor recreation is genuinely underrated and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (Fairview) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Austin, be prepared for the culture shock. healthcare is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

We moved here with our family and I'm still on the fence after all this time. Schools in Springfield area are decent. Kids love it here.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a software engineer, 54, moved here 11 years ago from Charlotte. I've lived in Downtown and The Heights, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Active local events and festivals
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Traffic during rush hour is rough
2. Road conditions need improvement
3. The job market situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Downtown: Great for retirees. underrated vibes, walkable.
- The Heights: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Charlotte, everything felt tough. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are wild. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $80K-$80K here.
**Final verdict:**
Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

The food scene here is decent. Tons of great sushi places. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.
