What surprised you most about Opelousas?

OK so Military spouse here. Poverty rate is 31.5%, which is higher than I expected. Average temperature is around 67--F, so the weather is moderate. Rent is about $734/month for a decent place. Household incomes average around $36,260 in Opelousas. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Would love some local perspective. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Night life is decent if you know the right spots.

I work in manufacturing here and it's been a really good experience overall. The job market for my field is challenging. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem tough.

I've been here 13 years and I love the pace of life here. The thing nobody mentions is safety. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is solid.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Midtown side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Give it a chance - it might surprise you..
