Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value healthcare, you'll love it. The nightlife is genuinely pretty good and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (Riverside) is stable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from New York, be prepared for the culture shock. cultural scene is completely different here. And Rising rent and home prices.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.
I've been here 3 years and it exceeded my expectations. The thing nobody mentions is nightlife. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the cost of living is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is surprisingly good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Pine Hills side vs the Fairview side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 3 years ago from Atlanta and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in North. It's decent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in education. If you're in government you might struggle.
People: Generally solid. It took about 3 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like Vietnamese.

I've been in West for 9 years. Moved from Denver for retirement. Here's my honest, detailed take:

The market right now is solid. We bought in 2016 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 1-bed in a safe area. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable.

Pros I've experienced:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods

Cons that are real:
- Nightlife is limited
- Dating scene is rough
Financially, we've found it surprisingly good compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are reasonable, gas is underrated.
