Hey, I'm a college student here and It's a a small town city with about 1,325 people. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The city has invested a lot in new development. Is this normal for Papaikou? The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The suburbs are where most families end up. The weather takes some getting used to. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting.

I've been living here for 15 years and I'd say I genuinely enjoy living here. The cultural scene is excellent compared to other places I've lived. Overall It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I've lived in Pine Hills for about 3 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's been a really good experience overall. When I first moved here from Dallas, I was surprised by traffic. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- The outdoor recreation scene is surprisingly good
The downsides:
- Can feel isolated
- Limited entertainment options
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for singles. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 1-bedroom. I love the pace of life here. Compared to New York it's average.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a marketing manager, 57, moved here 7 years ago from Salt Lake City. I've lived in Pine Hills and Oak Park, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Nice parks and green spaces
2. Good airport with direct flights
3. Strong sense of community
4. The people are generally pretty good - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Limited shopping options
3. The housing market situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Pine Hills: Great for singles. average vibes, walkable.
- Oak Park: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Salt Lake City, everything felt pretty good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are wild. Gas is established. You can live comfortably on $80K-$150K here.
**Final verdict:**
Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Hot take but it's exactly what I was looking for. I know a lot of people disagree but after 7 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem solid.
I've been here 5 years and I love the pace of life here. The thing nobody mentions is public transit. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into hiking, this place is hit or miss.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Westside side vs the Downtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
