Affordable areas near Portage?

First post here. We're a young couple and Crime rate is something to consider -Portage sits at 198.4 per 100K. Average temperature is around 50--F, so expect cold winters. The unemployment rate is 4.6%, which is about average. The food scene here is surprisingly good. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting.

Pros:
- Great weather
- Diverse community
- Lots of new development
- Good internet infrastructure

Cons:
- Limited nightlife
- Not very walkable
- Not enough green space
Worth the trade-offs? Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. I've lived in Greenfield for about 8 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I genuinely enjoy living here. When I first moved here from San Diego, I was surprised by walkability. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Good internet infrastructure
- The safety scene is underrated

The downsides:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Can feel isolated

Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for couples. No regrets on my end..

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want walkability, then yeah this place is great. But if job market matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

My experience has been mostly positive. it's been a really good experience overall. The only thing I'd watch out for is traffic. Other than that, Happy to answer more specific questions..

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is weather. I love the pace of life here. Worth doing your research before committing.

Came here for work and stayed because I love the pace of life here. The outdoor recreation is honestly solid and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Used to live on the Fairview side, now on the South side. Completely different vibe. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.

Weather-wise, the summers are tough and winters are wild. You get used to it after the first year.
