I'm a college student here and You can expect to pay around $1,138 for rent here. Crime rate is something to consider -Portage sits at 198.4 per 100K. Poverty rate is 9.4%, which is pretty low. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The city has invested a lot in new development. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in Midtown for 14 years. Moved from Phoenix for quality of life. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is improving. We bought in 2016 at k and it's now worth up significantly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. Older homes are where the value is.
**Employment:**
construction is strong here. consulting is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are wild for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
it's been a really good experience overall. The outdoor scene is hit or miss - we have hiking trails within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Midtown schools are tough. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Not very walkable outside downtown. Chain restaurants dominate. And cultural scene can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**

Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Greenfield. It's better than expected for what you get.
Jobs: The market is established right now, especially in manufacturing. If you're in construction you might struggle.
People: Generally tough. It took about 15 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: tough. Tons of options if you like Indian.

I've lived in Downtown for about 14 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
the quality of life is solid. When I first moved here from Houston, I was surprised by healthcare. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Lots of new development happening
- The dating scene scene is improving
The downsides:
- Winters are long and cold
- Homeless population growing downtown
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for retirees. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem improving.
I've been here 3 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is traffic. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the food scene is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is underrated.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Riverside side vs the Westside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
