Random thought, I'm a teacher here and Poverty rate is 9.0%, which is pretty low. The suburbs are where most families end up. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

Weather-wise, the summers are average and winters are competitive. You get used to it after the first year.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. I genuinely enjoy living here. Compared to Chicago it's hit or miss.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem challenging.
I've been here 6 years and I love the pace of life here. The thing nobody mentions is cultural scene. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into hiking, this place is excellent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The South side vs the Uptown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 4 years ago from New York and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in South. It's solid for what you get.
Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in engineering. If you're in marketing you might struggle.
People: Generally hit or miss. It took about 11 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like Italian.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

We moved here with our family and it was the best decision I ever made. Schools in Meadowbrook area are challenging. Kids love it here.
