I'm a teacher here and You can expect to pay around $892 for rent here. Average temperature is around 55--F, so expect cold winters. The unemployment rate is 2.3%, which is pretty low. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Would love some local perspective. Thanks! Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a social worker who relocated here from Seattle about 3 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and school.
Pros I've experienced:
- Active local events and festivals
- Four distinct seasons
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Bugs and humidity in summer
Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are affordable, gas is tough.
Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. Hope this helps!.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem improving.
I've been here 5 years and I love the pace of life here. The thing nobody mentions is public transit. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the community vibe is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is tough.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Oak Park side vs the North side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
