It's a a small town city with about 8,490 people. Poverty rate is 9.9%, which is pretty low. Rent is about $1,816/month for a decent place. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The food scene here is pretty good. Tons of great Italian places. I have mixed feelings honestly.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem pretty good.
I've been here 14 years and I love the pace of life here. The thing nobody mentions is cost of living. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the food scene is legit. And if you're into running, this place is decent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Westside side vs the Downtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Good luck with whatever you decide..

Bought a house here in 2018 and it's been a really good experience overall. Property values have gone up significantly since then.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 4 years ago from Charlotte and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Lakewood. It's hit or miss for what you get.
Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in marketing. If you're in retail you might struggle.
People: Generally challenging. It took about 16 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: decent. Tons of options if you like Indian.
Good luck with whatever you decide..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value school system, you'll love it. The nightlife is genuinely better than expected and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (Fairview) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. traffic is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Weather-wise, the summers are underrated and winters are stable. You get used to it after the first year.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want healthcare, then yeah this place is great. But if job market matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.
