Been meaning to ask this. I work in media and With a population of 36,758, Rock Island is a smaller city. Rent is about $819/month for a decent place. Average temperature is around 51--F, so expect cold winters. Crime rate is something to consider -Rock Island sits at 370.5 per 100K. The unemployment rate is 3.9%, which is pretty low. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The weather takes some getting used to. What would you do? The city has invested a lot in new development. The suburbs are where most families end up. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Property taxes are high but you get good services. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The city has invested a lot in new development. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The food scene here is surprisingly good.

I've lived in Old Town for about 7 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from LA, I was surprised by community vibe. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Good healthcare facilities
- The school system scene is better than expected
The downsides:
- Limited public transit options
- Property taxes are high
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for families. Definitely worth checking out..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a sales manager, 29, moved here 2 years ago from Salt Lake City. I've lived in Highland and Greenfield, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Lots of new development happening
2. Active local events and festivals
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Winters are long and cold
2. Limited shopping options
3. The cost of living situation is growing and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Highland: Great for couples. challenging vibes, walkable.
- Greenfield: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Salt Lake City, everything felt improving. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are wild. Gas is affordable. You can live comfortably on $80K-$90K here.
**Final verdict:**
Definitely worth checking out.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
