Best kept secrets of San Luis Obispo, CA

Hello, We have two kids and Median household income is $66,711, which feels about average for the area. Rent is about $1,906/month for a decent place. The unemployment rate is 4.2%, which is about average. It's a a smaller city city with about 48,039 people. Poverty rate is 6.5%, which is pretty low. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The suburbs are where most families end up.

Pros:
- Close to nature
- Lots of new development
- Good internet infrastructure

Cons:
- Rising rent prices
- Limited nightlife
- Mosquitoes and humidity
What would you do? Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The suburbs are where most families end up. Property taxes are high but you get good services. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Property taxes are high but you get good services. If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. it's exactly what I was looking for. Internet is tough in most areas.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.

I've been here 12 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is walkability. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the cost of living is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is pretty good.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Downtown side vs the Eastside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

The food scene here is tough. Tons of great Mediterranean places. it's improved dramatically in recent years.

I've been here 1 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is traffic. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the walkability is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is average.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The North side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Hope this helps!.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are average, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.
