Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.
I've been here 13 years and it's not perfect but it works for me. The thing nobody mentions is healthcare. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the safety is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is hit or miss.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Old Town side vs the Highland side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Definitely worth checking out..

As someone who grew up here, it's exactly what I was looking for. A lot has changed in the past few years though. healthcare used to be much stable but now it's better than expected.

We moved here with our family and it's not perfect but it works for me. Schools in Oak Park area are decent. Kids love it here.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 2-bedroom. it was the best decision I ever made. Compared to Atlanta it's decent.
