Just moved to Shelbyville, any tips?

Hey folks, With a population of 24,125, Shelbyville is a small town. Poverty rate is 20.3%, which is higher than I expected. You can expect to pay around $935 for rent here. Household incomes average around $52,290 in Shelbyville. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. What do you all think? Any help is appreciated. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is public transit. it's not perfect but it works for me. Worth doing your research before committing.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a software engineer who relocated here from San Francisco about 12 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and family.

Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Good schools in most areas
- Four distinct seasons

Cons that are real:
- Limited shopping options
- Dating scene is rough

Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are pricey, gas is improving.

Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Good luck with whatever you decide..

We moved here with our family and it's improved dramatically in recent years. Schools in Fairview area are challenging. Kids love it here.
