First post here. Property taxes are high but you get good services. It's not perfect, but the community is solid.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 9 years ago from Miami and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Midtown. It's decent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in engineering. If you're in manufacturing you might struggle.
People: Generally improving. It took about 4 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: surprisingly good. Tons of options if you like Mexican.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

I've lived in Oak Park for about 3 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's exactly what I was looking for. When I first moved here from Portland, I was surprised by cost of living. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- The food scene scene is average
The downsides:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Not very walkable outside downtown
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for couples. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. it was the best decision I ever made. Compared to Houston it's underrated.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value public transit, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (Riverside) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Austin, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Homeless population growing downtown.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I've lived in South for about 6 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's exactly what I was looking for. When I first moved here from Phoenix, I was surprised by safety. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Strong job market in several industries
- The cultural scene scene is pretty good
The downsides:
- Limited public transit options
- Not very walkable outside downtown
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for remote workers. Hope this helps!.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a chef who relocated here from Raleigh about 14 years ago. The main reasons were weather and a job opportunity.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Decent public transit for the size
- Affordable housing options
Cons that are real:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Limited entertainment options
Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are wild, gas is excellent.
Socially, I have mixed feelings honestly. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

My experience has been mostly positive. it's not perfect but it works for me. The only thing I'd watch out for is cost of living. Other than that, Would recommend to anyone considering it..
