What I wish I knew before living in Southaven

We have two kids and The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Anyone in a similar situation? The food scene here is surprisingly good.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 6 years ago from New York and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in South. It's solid for what you get.

Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in retail. If you're in construction you might struggle.

People: Generally solid. It took about 13 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: average. Tons of options if you like Italian.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem pretty good.

I've been here 9 years and I love the pace of life here. The thing nobody mentions is weather. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the public transit is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is decent.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Eastside side vs the Fairview side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Definitely worth checking out..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a physical therapist, 25, moved here 6 years ago from Seattle. I've lived in North and Riverside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Good airport with direct flights
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally improving - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Road conditions need improvement
2. Limited shopping options
3. The pet-friendliness situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- North: Great for young professionals. excellent vibes, walkable.
- Riverside: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Seattle, everything felt underrated. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $40K-$150K here.

**Final verdict:**
Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a pharmacist who relocated here from Dallas about 11 years ago. The main reasons were work and school.

Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Active local events and festivals

Cons that are real:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Dating scene is rough

Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are affordable, gas is solid.

Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. Happy to answer more specific questions..
