Anyone else feel this way? With a population of 69,926, St. Cloud is a smaller city. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Am I wrong here?

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a data analyst who relocated here from Charlotte about 5 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and a job opportunity.
Pros I've experienced:
- Active local events and festivals
- Diverse dining options
- Strong sense of community
Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Rising rent and home prices
Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are manageable, gas is tough.
Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 7 years and I love the pace of life here. The thing nobody mentions is housing market. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is underrated.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Westside side vs the Sunset side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Feel free to reach out with questions..

As someone who grew up here, it's improved dramatically in recent years. A lot has changed in the past few years though. walkability used to be much established but now it's challenging.

I've lived in Westside for about 8 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. When I first moved here from Seattle, I was surprised by community vibe. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Four distinct seasons
- Affordable housing options
- The food scene scene is hit or miss
The downsides:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Homeless population growing downtown
Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for families. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in Sunset for 5 years. Moved from Dallas for family. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is pretty good. We bought in 2018 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 3-bed in a safe area. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals.
**Employment:**
tech is strong here. hospitality is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are established for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
it was the best decision I ever made. The outdoor scene is challenging - we have rivers within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Sunset schools are surprisingly good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Limited high-paying job options. Property taxes are high. And public transit can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For young professionals, I'd say this is a 5/10. Feel free to reach out with questions.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

The food scene here is pretty good. Tons of great Italian places. I'm still on the fence after all this time.
